Peer-reviewed randomised controlled trial

psychosocial functioning multi-centre rct

A multi-centre trial assessed quality of life, self-concept and psychopathology after eight weeks of cosmetic camouflage use in children with burn scarring.

key findings

  • The published abstract reports significant improvement in socialisation, school and appearance scales of the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory.
  • Psychopathology scores decreased, particularly peer problems. Self-concept remained stable during the intervention.
  • The authors concluded that camouflage appeared to support quality of life, particularly social participation, in this studied group.
Material limitations

what this study does — and does not — show

  • Published online in June 2013; the journal issue is Burns 40(1), 135–149 (2014). These dates refer to the same study, not separate trials.
  • The comparison covers baseline and eight weeks. It does not establish lifelong benefit or predict an individual outcome.
  • The population had burn scarring: this is not an adult vitiligo trial or evidence of disease treatment.
  • Self-concept did not improve in the abstract. Do not describe every psychological outcome as improved.

Cosmetic camouflage addresses visible appearance. It does not replace diagnosis or medical treatment, and these findings are not a promise of individual benefit.
